I am going to make a quick aside to tell you about one of those lessons that stick with you for a very long time. One of my favorite bosses when I was a new Army Captain was then Colonel Joseph R. Inge, Commander of the 1st Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division. I was a newly assigned assistant Brigade S2 (Intelligence) and one of my jobs was to provide intelligence directly to the commander in his combat vehicle. During a train-up in preparation for our National Training Center (NTC) Rotation we were to be visited by Higher Headquarters, I do not remember who exactly, but I asked him about the “visit” and he answered; “Ric, there are a few things you always need to know, One, What are the rules of the game?, Two, Who are the players?, and three, What is the game you are playing? COL. Inge enjoyed a very successful career and commanded the First United States Army and United States Army, Japan. He retired in 2007 as a Lieutenant General after 38 years of service.
